ARM: Paul Denby 2009/2010 total UAE GTB Champion
How does it feel to be champion? Paul: It’s a great feeling to have won the title GTB, for me and for the team, for the team, there is a reward for all the efforts in the past few seasons set to the car developed to a point where she was able to challenge for top positions. On a personal level, it is extremely satisfying is to have ridden in such good company and come to the forefront in my first season I’m proud of what I achieved
Describe your season from round 1 in the finals … Paul: Round one was not to know very much the case, what is to be expected, was the start OK, I was too timid in the first turn, probably not, turn the car first corner, first run; cars disappeared in the GTA the distance, followed closely followed by the leaders of the GTB and I could ride a steady race to put unreliability to pay the dreams of a few faster cars GTB front of me, leaving me to the race in the third version, with which I was happy, although there was a distinct feeling that I had inherited third place from another, the mechanical disturbances, rather than go out and earn it. For the second race on the International Circuit, I was sharing the car with team owner John and have been second to change the pit will not do as good as it could have gone, maybe we should have a bit more have practiced! The race itself was fairly quiet for me, I guess you could say it was like racing a gentle introduction to racing was the only real race I have in the last two rounds. Will I was contagious in the BMW M3 Drew come at a fairly good pace, but with the last lap board and yet to catch another 2-3 seconds, it would be close, and I did not know if he actually before me in the race and I was lapping him straight I was asking everyone in the team radio, but no response, finally coming through turn 12 in the final lap, while I was on the rear bumper Alex Wills Will came and was confirmed in the third when I was able to him I would be back on the podium. I dove to the inside of it in the bowl, then do not want to but no contact (and far too polite) I have a lot of space in the last two corners and we ended up side by side through turn 16, succeeds with Will , have the edge over the line. This bothered me after the race, not because I had been beaten to a third party, but because I knew I was once again will be gone in 15 and 16 on a thin line and left him no room to get back to me, I had no illusions that I had gone through this position too cautious and too polite to a fault, I vowed not to repeat. Two fixed points meant finished, that I led GTB, but it felt like I do not just lucky as I actually did something special in my driving style to earn the position at this time.
Round three was a turning point for both the season and for my trip in the first two races in the 996 GT3 Harris and Martin appeared in the Ginetta in a different league to be me, they were so much faster on the club and international circuits, I could not imagine being able to keep up for another round, much less an entire race. But the third round was on the National Circuit, and this is my favorite track configuration of tracks I’ve driven, it provides a series of corners and bevels, the reward and merciless precision the lap times of over exuberant or to punish over-cautious. Before the training day the guys from ARMotors set includes some significant changes to the car and go practice, I have discovered that they had set the car was perfect I was on my own for this round as John business so had much time to practice and after practice Thursday night I was on the pace of the GTB-runner and I knew that I had a chance to run near the front the following day. That night and the following morning were terrible, for the first race I was not overly nervous, as the new kid no one had much of me and I especially do not expect much of me expected But after Thursday’s practice, I was coming to the race with a very real change in a good result and I was not my normal relaxed. Come race day, I qualified third in the GTB class, but a good start from me and a not so good from Harris & Martin, let me lead in the first corner and for three laps I was nervous trying me in a state of calm concentration, Will, with a focus on speed and line, rather than the growing image of a blue 996 GT3 in the mirror in the third round disaster for GTB driver Dew, a mistake on the back just an accident that destroyed his left M3 has led, sits in the middle of the track and code 60 comes, I can reassure them and get back to the heart rate that is manageable, Ginetta get past the restart Martin Harris GT3 and is now stuck on the back of my car, but a careful defensive line and good corner exit speed leaves him no room to get through, and I kept the first place to pit stop . After the pit stop, Martin handed the car to his teammate Eric Charles, who was not as fast and as they are now before i was catching Eric Harris easily with my dick stuck in the second stint, Harris and I swapped positions several times but somehow I made it before the end of 45 minutes and finally took my first victory of the season.
After lap 3 my confidence grew with each round of SHK. Hasher for two laps and then on my own again for two more of the season turned into a race for the title between Harris and I, we round up to 6 ran nose to tail for the length of each race and it was indeed very close, probably the next race in the GT championship, succeeded me in front of him at the end of each period. Coming into Round 7, I had a clear lead points and had made the decision to do everything possible to ensure that the championship was decided in this round, so that the last round as a backup if something went wrong. Come race day, the stewards decided to give me a benefit amounting to wait another 10 seconds in the pits during the mandatory stop. I was furious after fought nose to tail with my title rivals Harris for four consecutive laps I was able to win any logic to this decision other than one race to another driver to make things interesting to see the last race of the hand. Harris was smart enough to qualify with a slow time in order to justify the punishment was so my concerns were dismissed and the penalty stood.
Getting into the car I was talking to me even in my sensible strategy of forgetting the win and the focus on the championship, arguing with myself that a 10-second intervals and could not overcome just to be, why try? The problem was, I was really crazy (in a sentence … you Ill way) at what I still look relatively than an unwarranted penalty on my performance on the second place contender. I ARM owner and team manager Alex asked me to open up for a minute, stop the pit stop window, making me in the right order with the other runners GTB as quickly as possible so I could run my own race and see how things were made once the pit stops were over. It is a strange thing, anger, out of control if it can run in a race car dumb mistakes, but controlled anger of the way I felt during the round seven can be too large ; s focus and no doubt lead to the best drive of the season, I’ve not only catch up, and repeat the lead in GTB, but in the end to win the race by the largest margin of the whole season, perhaps the punishment was some basis after all … ….
Round 8 was all a celebration of our achievements, John Sinden was back in the car with me and we were there for all to stand and walk the flag on the podium together and celebrate the teams achievement is Khaleji motor sport because set of John’s love for racing and those of us lucky enough to go to him to thank him very much for the opportunity he gives us, managed a last victory for the season with John to share the driving huh tte for me was a perfect end of the season. Unfortunately, the gods had other plans this weekend and one of the regions brightest star Christophe Hissette died after an accident in practice comes in curve 16, for a rider of his talent to lose is an immeasurable loss to own racing in the UAE community, but on lap 8 I think the race track ended here, the time of puberty, as a means for children to follow our naivety we, dont risk in the same way we measure as adults, Christophe to have lost in Round 8, the United Arab Emirates has racing community lost its innocence and has now seen the ugly side of sport that we love.
What was / were the highlight / s of your season? Paul: Round 3, my first victory sticks in my head like a great day and Round 7, the first time that I say that I really blew away the opposition, which was really a precious day to remember for me can.
What was / were the biggest disappointment / s or anxious moment / s of the season? Paul: Nothing springs to mind, to be honest, we had a happy season and the team kept the car in top order throughout had me on the trip and ready to concentrate
Who would you thank? Paul: First, I thank you, Debbie, after several months nursing me back to health after an accident that could easily killed me had while racing motorcycles in 2007 Desert Challenge rally they had every right to demand, I stay away from any form of motor sport have, but they supported me from the first minute I was offered the drive and continues to apply to every race and have come to love and support, for which I eternally grateful am. To the team and sponsors for Khaleji had the faith to take me to their car and all teams from ARMotors, the many hours of work and sometime in the night on a race weekend, the car will safely at its best fü r the 45 minutes of racing and the Autodrome management, and finally to everyone who gives up their time to pass on a race weekend, sincerely thank all of you.
